Lamego is an ancient Portuguese town housing the most important temples of the country. It is situated on the crossroads connecting the inner part of Portugal with the lands located behind the River Douro, and Spanish lowlands with Portuguese coast. The town is surrounded by two hills. One of them houses castle built in the 12 century, the other is home to the church Nossa Senhora dos Remedios. The grand granite staircase leads to the church, comprised of 600 stairs laid along the fountains and little chapels. The central square with its baroques buildings resembles a picturesque garden surrounded by the 17-century mansions. Lamego is full of vineyards. The sparkling wine Raposeira, produced in these lands, is acknowledged to be one of the best in Portugal.
