Once you step into Nikko City, you will be astonished to see the huge number of historical and cultural heritage sites such as shrines and temples that are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as Cedar Avenue, Ashio Copper Mine, and more. The town is also blessed with rich nature, including beautiful wetlands called Kinu-numa-shitsugen and Oku-Nikko-shitsugen (a wetland in Oku-Nikko), which are registered as Ramsar Sites. Hot springs are also the town’s speciality and one of the most popular hot spring is Kinugawa Onsen (Kinugawa Hot Springs). Nikko is indeed a well-known tourist destination for domestic and international visitors.

The international tourist city of Nikko lies in the north of Tokyo, only 125 km (78 miles) away, and is located in the northeast of Tochigi Prefecture, bordering Fukushima Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture. The gross land area is 1,449.83 km2 (358,261 acres) comprising 25 percent of the prefecture’s gross land area. A large area of the city is registered as Nikko National Park. The town’s elevation ranges from 300 metres (984 feet) to more than 2,000 metres (6,562 feet), allowing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to be performed in Nikko throughout the year, as well as providing plentiful attractions as a tourist destination.

The city’s average temperature is around 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) in the populated area and around 7 degrees Celsius (44.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the mountain area. In summer the temperature is not very high, and in winter it often falls below zero. This unique climate nurtures the city’s beautiful natural environment.
