Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam with the population of more than 6 million people. It’s not only the political center of the country, but also its highly developed tourist destination. Hanoi combines eastern and western imprints in different architectural buildings: pagodas and temples, colonial villas, noisy streets and extensive boulevards. Its main natural sights are city’s scenic lakes surrounded by landscaped gardens. The largest and most beautiful is the West Lake, which once used to be a royal resort. Its shores feature many palaces and temples. Hanoi has a 1000-year history, striking with a great variety of tourists’ attractions. Despite of many wars and natural disasters, it still houses a lot of old historical monuments, among which are One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature, Hanoi Citadel, Grand Opera House, and other unique constructions. Hanoi hosts Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum with an old stilt house which once belonged to the Leader. The unique atmosphere of the ancient times can be felt in the Old Quarter and its narrow streets, named after the goods they used to sell: Sugar, Silk, Fan, Shoe. Nowadays these streets offer nearly everything, form fans to motorcycles. In 2010 Hanoi celebrated its 1000-year anniversary, looking like a luxurious oriental city with European charm at this festival.
