Discover the location ( Gisakura, Western Province Rwanda )

In Southwest Rwanda, just south of Lake Kivu on the Burundi border, One&Only Nyungwe House is set amongst the rich tea-plantations of Gisakura, on the edge of the iconic Nyungwe National Park. The park itself covers approximately 1020 km² of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps and bogs, and is one of the last mountain rainforest habitats on the planet.

History & Culture

Nyungwe Forest remains the largest mountain rainforest on the African continent. Nyungwe National Park is home to over 13 different species of primate and 20% of all the apes in Africa. The lush and diverse habitat is famously home to a large population of chimpanzees and endangered monkeys; including the owl faced monkey and the golden monkey, of which sightings are reported, but unverified.

The forest was cited by Birdlife International as “the most important site for biodiversity conservation in Rwanda” for its 275 recorded bird species of which 27 are endemic. Home to a myriad of stunning orchids, butterflies, moths and other fascinating creatures and insects, the Government of Rwanda declared Nyungwe a national park in 2005, affording it the highest level of protection in the country.

The resort itself, on the edge of the park, was originally developed in conjunction with the Rwandan Government in 2010. In 2017, it came under the management of One&Only, and after an extensive renovation and upgrade of facilities, it has become the unrivalled rainforest oasis you see today.

Useful Details

In the heart of Africa, fractionally south of the equator, Rwanda’s high altitude creates a remarkably pleasant tropical climate, with a fairly stable annual temperature of 15.5 degrees Celsius. Two wet seasons (March—May, and October—November) are characterised by rain, while two dry seasons (June—September, and December—February) tend to have light cloud cover which occasionally brings showers.

  • All visitors to Rwanda must present a passport valid for at least 6 months from date of travel. Visa requirements for entering Rwanda may vary significantly from country to country.
  • Electricity in Rwanda is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to Rwanda with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter.
  • Complimentary WiFi internet access is available in all private guest rooms and in the main resort building, including the guest lounge, bar and restaurant.
  • Rwanda has four official languages: Kinywarwanda, English, French and Swahili.
  • Guests may check-in from 2pm and are requested to depart rooms by 11am.
  • Central African Time (UCT +2)
