Artist Residency
Our multi-disciplinary artist residency program introduces the possibility for creative collaboration between international artists and Sumba artisans. We invite contemporary artists and designers to Cap Karoso to share their creative universe with local artisans while learning ancestral traditions. In this cross-sharing of knowledge and inspiration, a new cultural dialogue is born.
Across Cap Karoso — from the lounge to the beach club, to your studio or villa — the universal language of Art creates a meaningful connection with the ancestral culture of Sumba. Explore artistic reflections on Marapu culture through commissioned artwork by Indonesian and international artists. Design & Craft. Handmade. Inspired. Local. Start exploring the island of Sumba and its influences through the details inside your room.
Cultural Exploration
Cap Karoso is located in Kodi, a part of Sumba Island that’s a world of its own. Here, time stands still. The lives of villagers run according to the rhythms of sacred ceremonies and the words of Ratos — local shamans. These are living traditions of an ancient religion rooted in animist beliefs called Marapu. With the help of local communities, experience pieces of this long-preserved culture, including traditional fishing, ikat weaving, and Sumbanese sandalwood horse riding.
Water and land
Enjoy the awe-inspiring diversity of waters that surround the resort. Swim or snorkel in peaceful Karoso Lagoon, catch a perfect wave in Pero, fish with locals, or dive into the tantalizing turquoise of the Weekuri saltwater lake. Cap Karoso is surrounded by spectacularly unspoiled nature that’s home to a multitude of indigenous species. This is the kind of terrain that’s sure to call out to your adventurous spirit. Hike, bike, or take off in one of our electric cars to explore a landscape diverse enough to include both tropical forests and savanna, waterfalls, and dry plains. Get lost, then find your way like a true explorer.

Special touches
Whether you’re traveling with young children or older parents, we’re happy to personalize your stay so you can enjoy every moment together. If you’d like a babysitter to watch little ones while you unwind over an evening drink, you’re in need of a baby crib or changing table, or you’re hoping to find activities fit for the whole family, we’re here to make you feel at home.
The Farm
Crops
What was once unused, rocky land is now covered in fertile organic gardens. Mulching, composting and sustainable water management helped breathe new life into the soil, which stays rich, thanks to natural fertilizer produced by our buffaloes. Ultimately, these gardens mean more options for our menus, as many ingredients, such as salad greens and tomatoes, were previously unavailable on the island. Being mindful of the local ecosystem and climate, our master farmer selected the crops that would fill the needs of the resort.
Farming School
Giving back to the local community, our farm hosts a training program in landscaping and farming—skills that often lack in Sumba and most parts of Indonesia. Any interested locals can learn about plant propagation, nursery skills, plant care, garden maintenance, organic farming and permaculture, plus basic health and safety in and around the garden. The aim of our school is to teach local farmers techniques they can then bring to their own land, as well as offer younger generations valuable skills in hospitality landscaping.
Preservation
Sumba Island, particularly the coastal site the resort calls home, is a delicate ecosystem made up of farmland, forest, seaside terrain, and coral reef. Every detail of Cap Karoso has been meticulously considered to preserve this fragile environment and rehabilitate damaged areas. Initiatives already in practice include removal of non-indigenous weed species, careful and water-conscious selection of landscape plants, and use of an eco-friendly water treatment system. Additionally, we draw half of our energy from an onsite solar panel park, avoid any plastic packaging and reduce food waste with the help of our farm animals.
Dining
Julang
A unique blend of a fine-dining restaurant and a community table, Julang welcomes star chefs from France and beyond for short residencies. These guest chefs are tasked with turning ingredients from our organic farm into fresh dishes, bringing their individual styles and creativity to each meal they create. Julang hosts a maximum of 28 guests per dinner, ensuring an intimate experience around the chef’s table.
Beach Club
Led by our Executive Chef, Antoine LeVacon, Beach Club is the perfect place to enjoy casual yet refined cuisine featuring products from our farm. Here, the focus is on sharing. Dig into a whole fish from the grill and pass pans of handmade pasta around the table. It’s all about rediscovering the joy of eating together.
Apicine
Enjoy a flawless drink and delicious Indo-Basque finger foods with sweeping horizon views.
